I came into
Baldwin Wallace University expecting this culturally emerging, academically challenging, and environmentally friendly community, however, I did not get that. Like most African American students, I felt disconnected and ready to change that, immediately. Not only was I expecting to be connected to the community, but, I expected myself to have the best courses and housing situation, with the perfect roommate. Unfortatnely, I did not receive that. I actually ended up changing my dorm suite and changing all of my friends. Even through all of this turmoil during the first couple of months, I still found myself eager to join many different organizations on the campus, however, I only found one that I truly loved Circle K International, CKI is an organization that is focused particularly on volunteering time to various different causes, which is something I am very passionate about. I also found myself changing my major from Marketing to Sustainability with two minors in English and Urban Studies. I truly found myself not enjoying the ease of learning the business material with little effort, I also felt like there were more topics in life to cover in Cleveland. Cleveland has many problems and I felt like they were not acknowledged because not too many students are from the ghettos of Cleveland, like I am. Currently, I am now accepting of the fact that my first semester will be worst and only bad semester I have at BW, for I have found many different solutions, friends, resources, outlets and other ways to express my concern for diversity. I am also more accepting of the fact that the Honors Program was not what I expected, especially when it came to the academics they provided.
Overall, I will be entering in this next semester with a new mindset, more relaxed, and ready to practice what I have always wanted to practice- Buddhism. Not only this, but I might even Dual-Degree and double minor. I now see many of the possibilities.
If I could give one type of advice to a Freshman, it would be, take everything patiently but with all effort you can give.
That is Mehkia and me.
I am a current Undergraduate Student majoring in Sustainability at the Baldwin Wallace University.
