It started when I was 12 years old. I was always very depressed and empty, life did not feel right. I never listened to Justin Bieber, or the Pussy Cat Dolls, I listened to old Hip Hop and Pop music. As a pre-teen and teen I always hid music from others because I knew it was not accepted in the environment and others were not listening to it. I was the odd one out. It was the moment I heard "Look At Me Now" by Chris Brown, when my life changed as I knew it.
Everyone has that moment when their routine as a youth gets too young and "childish". Well, that is what I hit, I hit the "I am way too old for Tinker Bell soundtracks" phase. I soon started to pay attention to the music my parents listened to, both of my parents have drastically different music tastes. For my mother: Kem, Sade, Chris Brown, The Temptations, MICHAEL JACKSON, Madonna, and many other artists. For my father: NWA, ICE CUBE, The Debarges, and also many other artists. Michael Jackson and Ice Cube are both in capital letters because they were and still my favorite of my parents music selections.
SO WHEN AND WHY DID CHRIS BROWN STICK OUT?
Well, actually it wasn’t the moment I heard Chris Brown voice that made me really love his music. It was the other artists associated with Chris's music that initially attracted me to Chris, and kept me coming back for more. For example, when I first listened to Chris on YouTube, I was recommended Bad Girl, by Usher. Yes! Usher, I never truly listened to Usher, but once I listened to Usher, I fell in love and was recommended R Kelly, and the recommendations started to get larger and more diverse.
Eventually, I found myself reaching out to the Team Breezy community and finding others to relate with, through similar music interests. I became a very strong supporter for Chris's music, even through his relationship with Rhianna, and drama with Drake.
So, we come back to the question everyone asks me, " Why Chris"?. Maybe, I love Chris's voice because I had a crush on him, or maybe it was something deeper.
I have to say something deeper!
Now listen, the relationships developed with Team Breezy, during a n emotional period in the life cannot be replaced. I now have bonds with individuals all because of Team Breezy, and every time I hear a song by Chris, I think of those bonds and relationships and I appreciate his voice. I appreciate his voice for being there to comfort not only me, but others. And allowing his voice to bring us all together, something like the Sirens lured Odysseus to them. The difference is, is Chris is luring us to a support system.
